Electroclash 2

various artists
label:: Mogul Electro

Electroclash 2 follows the two compilations Larry Tee released on his label and the full length by WIT. It no longer relies exclusively on the talent of NYC bands, though some are represented here.

I really like the Proper Filthy Naughty, Future Wives, and Barcelona tracks. I also like the Freezepop, WIT and Badd Inc. tracks, though I had known them previously, which decreased their impact for me.

Magpie

various artists
label:: RPM

RPM started a series of compilation with a Brit sensibility called Lipsmackin' 70s, unafraid to celebrate musical explosions and implosions from the late 1960s and early 1970s with a brash and exciting result. With compilations inspired by the Junkshop Pop Collectors Guild called Velvet Tinmine - 20 Junk Shop Glam Ravers, ZigZag - 20 Junkshop Soft Rock Singles, Hot Hits on 45 and Magpie - 20 Junkshop Pop Ads & Themes, RPM has dug into the British vaults to unhouse the un-holy; that which has become increasingly more collectible these days.

Magpie - 20 Junkshop Pop Ads & Themes was one of my favorite compilations from last year. Its themes are "TV themes, film music, adverts, junkshop pop; a magpie hoard of incidental music backgrounding the period 1970-1974." Pop music which was at once and long ago throwaway (and thrown away), is now collectible: and RPM has done a wonderful job with this series of compilations.

M83

title:: Dead Cities, Red Seas & Lost Ghosts
label:: Gooom Disques

Guest reviewer George really surprised me on this one. I had heard he really liked M83, so I tracked him down to review the full length and (last week) their newest single. George does love the band, but he has issues with this record.

Read the full review to find out why a fan of M83 finds Dead cities to be a letdown. The reasons are spelled out and supported in example. Nice writing George!

Mr. Airplane Man

title:: C'mon DJ
label:: Sympathy For The Record Industry

C'mon DJ is Mr. Airplane Man's 3rd full length and since I haven't been following the band's various releases I can't compare this album to the previous ones. I can say that this album is a wonderful work in the continually growing stash of retro stripped down rock'n'roll.

Mr. Airplane Man is a female 2 piece (guitar, drums and vocals, sometimes augmented by more on cd, but usually staying stripped down) originally from the Boston, MA area who base their sound in a blues based sound, but aren't afraid to branch out successfully into other music styles, like a homegrown version of Holly Golightly or Mazzy Star with an edge. I've seen Mr Airplane Man live in concert and I'd highly recommend seeing them especially when they are supporting bands like The Real Kids - you can't go wrong!

T. Raumschmiere

title:: Rabaukendisko
label:: Novamute

The second single from the T. Raumschmiere (Marco Haas) full length Radio Blackout. Rabaukendisko has 4 very different versions of the track Rabaukendisko, and a video of the song as well.

I like Rabaukendisko 2 and Rabaukendisko (the Bug's DANCEHELL RMX) on the single, but would not advise you to get the CD version just for the video - stick to the vinyl.
