Brain Donor

title:: Love Peace & F*ck
label:: Impressario

The music is proto-rock in the vein of Grand Funk Railroad or Cream. It is heavy, with the sound of Gibson bass, guitar solos, and lots of jamming.

I had really waited for this album with high expectations, which have not been met by the result.

De-Phazz

title:: Detunized Gravity
label:: Mole Listening Pearls

De-Phazz is an open project centering around Pit Baumgartner. 'Detunized Gravity' is their first LP. The vocal songs use several different vocalists.

De-Phazz have derived their sound from triphop and drum 'n bass. Their sound is smooth and sexy, with the efficiency of machinery, and human warmth.

Love Her By Name- a Lesley Gore tribute

various artists
label:: Room-Filling Sounds

Love Her By Name: A Lesley Gore Tribute is a cdr compilation of Lesley Gore's songs performed by other artists. And even if the title does contain the dreaded word "tribute", it doesn't stink any more than Lesley herself. The majority of the performances are contemporary with Gore's release of the song, which helps considerably.

However the real credit must go to the Lesley Gore email list, which assisted one list member in its creation. It seems their obsessive drive to see every musician in the world as a potential Lesley-phile has turned up enough recordings that it was actually possible to pick 30 good ones.

Mum

title:: Mum Remixed
label:: TMT Entertainment

4 songs from Múm's debut CD 'Yesterday Was Dramatic, Today Is OK' are remixed by a series of Icelandic and European artists.

I love Múm themselves. I don't need artists I don't like as much as Múm reinterpreting songs I love the original versions of. On the plus side, I had never heard any of the Icelandic artists who did these remixes. Maybe some of them will go on to release strong records of their own.

Lee Perry

title:: Skanking With The Upsetter
label:: Jamaican Recordings

Close your eyes and let the bass and echoing reverb penetrate your mind. This CD compiles rare and unreleased dubs from 1971 - 1974.

Listening to the sharp transitions and mixing effects Lee Perry worked with I am reminded of everything from the pop of Stereo Total to the glitch tech artists, and how indebted all of us are to the sounds of Jamaican dub from the seventies.

Queen of Japan

title:: Nightlife In Tokyo
label:: Angelika Kohlermann

Queen Of Japan is one of the many identities of Austrian Hans Platzgumer, founder of the NYC band HP Zinker in the early 90's and Hamburg band The Golden Lemons in the late 90's.

'Nightlife In Tokyo" is a cover album with female vocal electropop versions of 70's and 80's songs.

This Heat

title:: Tago Mago
label:: Canterbury Dream

The recorded history of This Heat begins around 1976 and ends around 1981. I was always under the Impression that only 3 records were ever recorded, and a Peel Sessions live/in studio thing. I was wrong.

I was afraid this CD would merely be a completist's trophy, but, sound quality aside, there are some for outstanding performances here and the studio tracks, while not very well recorded, more than make up for what they lack in fidelity.
