70's filmsongs from India, Bollywood. This record has a lot of songs that are fun, and are a change of pace from practically anything else in our library right now.

From Greece. Easypop which sounds like a cross of early Momus, the Trembling Stars, and stuff on the Siesta label. 3 of the 7 songs on this record have really been sticking in my head in a pleasant way. They would be "Billy Liar (bossa nova 1965)", "Smiles", and "Over The Rainbow".

magazine + CD / VARIOUS / The 26th Commandment - Thou shalt Expand Thy Mind / Ptolemaic Terrascope #26

The latest issue of the UK psychedelia fanzine comes with a 16 song CD which has (I believe) exclusive songs by many lesser known bands, as well as songs by The Supreme Dicks, Mourning Cloak, Hood, The Loud Family, and The Green Pajamas.

10" / ECHOBOY / "Scene 30" b-w "Vitamins & Oil" / Earworm Records

Their website really tells you nothing but I can tell you that this 10" has a nice sound of the music now called post-krautrock. The 2 instrumentals are good, and would fit on NCP or rock programming on WZBC. Here's what Jorg Winzer has to say about it on his Mind The Gap update "Kraftwerkian electronics meet a Neu!-groove on side A, "Vitamins and oil" sounds as if taken from the score of a modernist Western movie - comes in stamped die-cut sleeve".

7" / BANGS / Kill Rock Stars

This is the February 99 release of the KRS "mail order freak" series, which are special singles you can subscribe to. We have a handful of these singles, including (most recently) the Comet Gain "If I Had A Soul" one and the Mocket one. The Bangs are no stranger to WZBC either. We have a single and a CD from them. They feature Maggie Vail, the younger sister of Bikini Kills (and the Frumpies) Toby Vail. She plays bass and vocal. While you've heard their sound before, they play with sincerity and enthusiasm.

here is the band's website, This is Cato's second single. It follows up the 7" on Lissys that we also have in our collection.

7" / NOVAK / "Blue Chinook" b-w "Peggy's Well (mild)" /Kitty Kitty

The A-side of this 7" waill be on their new CD which we should get serviced with, as it is released in the US on the Hidden Agenda label. In the UK it is on the Kitty Kitty label, as this 7" is. The B-side is a very different sounding version of a song from the LP as well. Novak have given us some really great singles in the past, and this single lives up to any expectations you may have if you already love them. The production is very good, and the instrumentation is not typical.

7" / CAMERA OBSCURA / "Your Sound" / Andmoresound

Last week their first 7" was playlisted. This is their second (and only other) release. They play light pop not that far removed from The Delgados. They are from Glasgow, and there are 3 songs on this single.

7" / MOTOR LIFE CO. / "Trod on your Head-Mine" b-w "Show the Cosmos" / Mei-Mei

The second release by this new UK label which debuted with the release of the excellent "Jack Nance Hair" 7" by Comet Gain. This band play more on a Brit-pop indy sound.

7" / THE KILLJOYS / "Johnny Won't Get To Heaven" b-w "Naïve" / Damaged Goods

This is a reissue of a 1977 single on Raw Records by the London punk rock band which saw the emergence of Kevin Rowland, who went on to front Dexys Midnight Runners in a radical departure of sound. Both songs are very good, and it's great to see these songs available again, on pink vinyl as well.

7" / TOULOUSE / "Checks and Credit" b-w "The Subway Section of Town"& "Plastichrome Suitcase" / Tinseltones Records

We currently have their LP on rock playlist too. This band was from Chicago, but have moved to the Boston area. They are a very different band than you usually here from this area. They were described as sounding like a Factory Records band by WZBC DJ Berry at their recent show opening for The Delgados. The 3 songs here on this EP are much more recent than the LP we already have. To me Toulouse honor the past, but are more important as part of a new wave of pop romanticism heralded by such bands as My Favorite, who Toulouse played with at MIT this past weekend.
